I am seeking a fun driver and companion to drive my son from our home in Chevy Chase, MD to his adaptive sports program in Baltimore, MD on around five Saturdays this spring, through June 16th. (There is an option to continue doing this in the fall.) Ideally you will have an interest in, and perhaps experience with, children with disabilities/adaptive sports/PT or OT. I will provide complete training in how to carry out the tasks associated with his care.
You will need to be at our house by 10:30 AM and will be back in Chevy Chase around 5:30 PM. We have a vehicle you may use–you must have a clean driving record.
My son is almost 7 years old with an awesome personality and a special love of music. He uses a manual wheelchair. He was born with Spina Bifida and is paralyzed from the hips down. He weighs 53 lbs and needs to be lifted out of his wheelchair into the car seat. You must also be able to lift his wheelchair into and out of the back of the car.
He requires a catheter every 3 hours–this means you help him stick a small tube into his belly button and wait a few minutes for an attached plastic bag to fill. You then dispose of the tube and bag in the trash.
His adaptive sports program takes place at the Kennedy Krieger High School on Greenspring Ave. He starts with swimming so he needs to be changed into his suit. After swimming he needs help changing into his clothes for wheelchair tennis and wheelchair softball. I generally sit and watch the programs but if you want to help his coaches that is also an option. It’s an incredible program.
I will pay $20/hr, negotiable if you have special qualifications.
Thanks in advance for your interest. Please email me with your interest, availability, and any relevant experience.
